JPEG vs PNG: When to Use Which

JPEG is the most widely supported image format on the web. It uses lossy compression to achieve dramatically smaller file sizes compared to PNG — often 5–10x smaller at visually equivalent quality. This makes JPEG ideal for sharing via email, uploading to social media, and embedding in presentations.

Choose JPEG when file size matters more than pixel-perfect accuracy: photographs, document scans, presentation slides, and general-purpose image sharing. The adjustable quality slider lets you find the perfect balance between size and fidelity for your specific use case.

Choose PNG instead when you need lossless quality — technical diagrams, text-heavy documents, or images with transparency. Our PDF to PNG tool is available for those cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to convert my PDF to JPEG here?

Yes. All processing happens entirely in your browser using pdf.js. Your files are never uploaded to any server — they stay on your device from start to finish.

What quality should I choose?

90% (the default) offers an excellent balance of quality and file size for most uses. Use 100% for maximum fidelity or lower values (50–70%) when you need smaller files for web or email.

What is the difference between JPEG and PNG?

JPEG uses lossy compression — files are much smaller but some quality is lost. PNG uses lossless compression — files are larger but perfectly sharp. Choose JPEG for photos and general use, PNG when you need pixel-perfect output.

Can I convert a multi-page PDF?

Yes. Every page is converted to a separate JPEG image. Download them all as a single ZIP or pick individual pages.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

No. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password protection first using our Remove Password tool.

Is there a file size or page limit?

No artificial limits. Everything runs in your browser, so the only constraint is your device's available memory and processing power.
